A Man Portable Air Defense System Crewmember
is part of the Army's field artillery
team. Artillery are weapons that fire
large ammunition or missiles to support
infantry and tank units in combat. The
man portable air defense system crewmember
supervises or serves as member of portable
Air Defense system missile unit and air
defense activity engaged in operations
and intelligence functions.
Requirements:

A minimum score of 105 in aptitude
area OF

A physical demands rating of moderately
heavy ((be able to lift on an occasional
basis a maximum of 80 pounds with
frequent or constant lifting of 40
pounds)

Normal color vision
-
A security clearance of CONFIDENTIAL

Minimum height of 64 inches

U.S. Citizenship
-
Distance vision correctable to 20/20
without multifocal lenses
-
Formal training (completion of MOS
14M course conducted under the auspices
of the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery
School) mandatory.
Duties:

Establish and maintain radio and
wire communications
-
Apply infrared techniques to detect
and engage targets
Identify 'friend or foe' forces

Resupply ammunition
-
Prepare man portable air defense
system for firing

Fire man portable air defense system
Training:
-
Nine weeks of basic training
-
19 weeks of Advanced Individual
Training at Fort Bliss, Texas (Part
of this time is spent in a classroom
and part in the field under simulated
combat conditions)
