MWR Sponsors Long Drive Championship, Winner Takes $10K

All eyes are focused on a drive launched by reigning NCAA Division I golf champion Jamie Lovemark of the University of Southern California during a recent exhibition at the Fort Belvoir, Va., Golf Club.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Army News Service) - Golfers are driving for dough at more than two dozen Army installations during the 2007 Military Long Drive Championships presented by Cadbury Schweppes. One big hitter will walk off with $10,000 and bragging rights as the 2007 Military Long-Driver.
In conjunction with the 2007 RE/MAX World Long Drive Championships, 25 Army installations are hosting local qualifiers open to active-duty and reserve-component Soldiers through Sept. 4.
"This is a great opportunity to showcase the talents of our military golfers and give them a shot at playing with the pros," said Bill Sport, Army Golf Program manager at the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command. "We're already working toward expanding the number of qualifying locations in future years."
Piney Valley Golf Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and the Fort Lewis, Wash., Golf Course co-launched the Army Family and MWR Command-sponsored event Aug. 3.
Winners from each of five districts will earn an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the military division of the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship Oct. 25 at Palms Golf Club Driving Range in Mesquite, Nev. Golfers from 12 countries compete in the finals, which are televised by ESPN.
