Army Secretary Endorses New Body Armor Email This Story Print This Story

Soldiers at war have said the additional armor - two side plates that each weigh 2 1/2 pounds - will weigh them down and limit their fighting flexibility. These Soldiers often carry as much as 70 pounds of equipment, including armor, weapons and water.

"That's going to add weight, of course," Harvey told Pentagon reporters at a news conference. "You've read where certain Soldiers aren't happy about that. But we think it's in their best interest to do this."
Mr. Harvey want's soldiers to have more weight despite evidence that only 1 soldier who's died in the last 3 years was shot in the side. I'm sure it does help but most soldiers don't want the extra weight, many of them already carrying 70 pounds of equipment. He's also suggesting a cut in combat units for the Guard which would mean that combat units get rotated back into active duty more quickly which will put a major strain on the Guard. Harvey was just offering his opinions but it sure seems like he's making a few bad calls on how to help out our Military.
