The United States has unmatched military and economic strength, but is it losing its role as a force for global stability? With hindsight, we may see 2006 as the end of Pax Americana. Ever since World War II, the United States has used its military and economic superiority to promote a stable world order that has, on the whole, kept the peace and spread prosperity. But the United States increasingly lacks both the power and the will to play this role. It isn't just Iraq, though Iraq has been profoundly destabilizing and demoralizing. Many other factors erode U.S. power: China's rise; probable nuclear proliferation; shrinking support for open trade; higher spending for Social Security and Medicare that squeezes the military, and the weakness of traditional U.S. allies, Europe and Japan. Historically empires rise and fall but their fall has been because of deterioration from within. Perhaps we should get busy cleaning house? What do you think? Read the full story

You said it!
We had better wake up. I think we care too much what the rest of the world thinks about us. We need to reevaluate our goals and then live by our convictions.
i hope all the tours are going to return home and stay home happy holdidays and merry christmas hugssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
my opinion is that we have an overbearing need to be loved by others. the sad truth is that this will never happen. so, we first must remove ourselves from the UN, then NATO. having said this, it woulld be a mistake to remove ourselves from the world stage. when there is aggresion against us or one of our friends we should acct. when there is natural disasters we should be the first in line with help. in short we should simply be "Amaricans" with all our faults along wiith all the great things in our nations character. we can no longer worry what the rest of the world thinks of us, it is time to but the priority back where it belongs and that is in what we think of ourselvs.
thoughts from texas
Recently, over a couple of drinks in a neighborhood tavern, the subject of the Iraq War came into play. Though the conversation was about the similarites of the way returning troops are treated (then and now) Vietnam and Iraq, I was faced with a woman who overheared conversation about positive things happening there. Little to my knowing, she let the bartender know, not me, that she just lost a brother in Iraq. The fact that this woman overheared this was troubling to her(and me) as she left. The bartender: Sharon expressed her feelings toward me about being insensitive. Would I have wanted to debate this war knowing this woman a few feet away just lost a family member? Definately not. Are these issues that need to be addressed? Definately. I'm asking for a soldier's point of view here. I have spoken to soldiers and marines who feel their work there is not in vain. Despite the horrors, carnage and tragedy in Iraq, that good, benefeficial things have/are occuiring there. Are there good things going on in Iraq beyond what the popular media portreys, or is it all propaganda? You guys over there could tell her better. I'd love you to write her and let her know what you think. Write to: 8479 E McDonald Dr. Scottsdale, Az. 85250 (bar address) :Care of Sharon.
Write about good and bad, but I hope you mention that there is good occuring, and re-affrrirm my beliefs that only the bad is mostly reported in most media. Even in war, good and wonderful things can happen. She tells me that all her info comes from US Troops who have served there recently. I'm hoping that there are so many of you who believe in what you are fighting (in the larger sense) and being there and over there someplace else too. The negative media that only reports tragedy but not everyday miracles needs to be addressed. So many Americans know its happening, but a large portion never hears that. CNN, NBC, CBS, and a gal named Sharon either never hear about it, or refuse to listen and report it. Some nice letters from active soldiers, airmen or sailors would be appreciated. Sharon is a sweetheart, but like a lot of sweet people, they think our enemies will just go away as long as we all just wish and pray for peace. I pray for peace too. Just wish those who want to kill us cared about peace as well. Peace is wonderful as long as everybody plays by the same rules. Until then, I can't thank you guys and gals enough for defending us and our rights and freedoms. I live in the land of the free and brave because of all you, I'd never trade it for anything.
I love all you. Happy holidays and be vigillent and safe. I believe in winning a mission to fight to be able to come home soon.
A warm fireplace, holiday music , gifts under a tree are all things you will not miss out on. The spirit of Christmas is something that has no set date.
I think the Iraqi war is unwinnable. As fast as we eliminate the enemy, new fighters are born and trained to hate America, Democracy, Freedom and Jesus! We must engage this enemy differently than war and fighting. Destroying the enemy economically and through isolation seems to be a more logical approach without knowing alot of previledged information.
