Sergeant in Trouble for Playboy Spread Email This Story Print This Story

SAN ANTONIO - An Air Force staff sergeant who posed nude for Playboy magazine has been relieved of her duties while the military investigates, officials said Thursday.

In February's issue, hitting newsstands this week, Michelle Manhart is photographed in uniform yelling and holding weapons under the headline "Tough Love." The following pages show her partially clothed, wearing her dog tags while working out, as well as completely nude.
Do you think this Marine was treated fairly? Did she cross the line? What do you think should happen to a male marine if he posed for a woman's magazine of the same nature as Playboy?

I think any service member who conducts him or herself to this kind of low moral manner is an embarresment to the United States of America. So yes both men and women should be punished.

I personally do not think that she should be punished at all for what she did, i mean people act like she comminted a crime or something last time i heard it was not a crime to pose nude in a magazine, so no she should not be punished for that. The girl is only in the marine not prison.

I gave the Army 20 years and I don't belive this Marine should be punished and the whole thing dropped. Look at what our former Commander in Chief did and got away with it with a bunch of fancy lawyer talk.

Excuse me "mj2005" but actually, it is a crime. It is a misuse of the military uniform for monetary gain. U.S. Code and military regs make this a felony punishable by up to a year in prison and $5000.00 fine. Aside from the criminality of her actions I think it is a degradation of the moral standing of the military. Per military regs this is also conduct unbecoming and it diminishes the honor of all servicemembers, past, present and future. She is a disgrace to the uniform and she should be court marshalled and receive the maximum sentence under the Uniform Code of Militrary Justice and then do the year in Federal prison, forfiet any profit made by using our uniform and pay an additional $5000.00 fine. I am a Desert Storm Vet, an Airborne Sapper (Combat Engineer) with 5 years of honorable service to my country. My Dad is a Navy Vet, my uncle a Korean War Vet, My father in law an Army Vet, two of my wife's uncles are Viet Nam Vets and my Nephew is a currently serving Marine. One of my brother's is a cop and the other an Ordained Minister. We ALL think this is disgusting and disgraceful and a cheapening of the uniform. As for Mr. Speich, if you indeed gave the Army 20 years then you should know better and she is an Air Force Sergeant, not a Marine. Marines have more honor than this. For those who claim she has a right to do this, you are wrong. As a servicemember she voluntarily signed away her rights when she enlisted and only has those rights accorded her by MILITARY regulation. She should have ended her enlistment and then done this......but then, without the uniform she would not have been asked to pose in the first place.

I was stationed with a Marine Seargent named Julie whose playboy spread was published in 1981. She was kicked out of the Marine Corp within days of the magazines release. She was a very sweet and kind girl. She was proud to be a Marine. It was a shame she lost her career over it.

Lee S., sounds harsh for just posing nude. I mean, look what our ex-president did in the white house. Now that was a little more disgraceful to our country than posing nude. He wasn't fined at all. And i'm sure he made a little money with it too. She's not the first nor the last to pose nude in an un-named military uniform. I feel she should punished, but not to the extent you're hoping for. She should be given the chance to finish her career or get out under a general discharge. If she chose to stay in, then she should understand that posing nude in uniform again will bring "harsh punishment." I have ten years, and counting, honorable service and an OIF II and III vet.

When you enlist you give up your rights as a citizen, you enter a world that is not civilized but instead is brutal. this is something that a civilian cant understand, you are so worried about your rights that you never think weather this is in the best interest of the nation or not. that is what the military is, a body that sacrifices the individual comforts and rights of the individual for the comfort and rights of the socity. ask your self when the last time an invading military kicked down your door and treated you like a murdering criminal with no proof? (what we happen to be doing in Iraq) you don't fear that, all yuo have to worry about is your personal rights and how they might be breached in the smallest way. this Staff Sargent deserves to be kicked out of the Air Force and striped of all honors.
