Here's what we know:
- The UK, Iraq, and US claim that the captured soldiers were doing their job in Iraqi waters.
- The Iranians say that the soldiers were in Iranian waters.
- The soldiers were taken prisoner by Iran.
Here's what we don't know:
- Why would Iran take these UK Soldiers prisoner instead of just saying "Hey, you're in our waters...go away!"?
The whole situation has the possiblility of a very bad outcome and could lead to war with Iran. What's your take on it?

Well first of all I highly doubt that Iran would have just said "hey your in our waters go away!"
No, they would have said it in Aribic. But I think the point is why take them prisoner? What could they possibly have to gain?
This is my first time to read this Blog on Army.Com. And, I must state that the question you posit under the heading "Here's what we don't know" you appear to me to be an extension of the liberal news media which always assumes that the American Government is wrong. Your question: "Why would Iran take these UK Soldiers prisoner instead of just saying 'Hey, you're in our waters...go away!'?", to me paints Iran in the right and GB in the wrong. The answer to your question is simple. Iran wants trouble. Iran wants the left leaning public and its own people to rally behind Iran if GB takes the action it should take if its soldiers are not released. Then, Iran will say "this is why we are justified in developing nuclear weapons - as a defense.
