Senate Supports a Pullout Date in Iraq War Bill Email This Story Print This Story

“When it comes to the war in Iraq, the American people have spoken, the House and Senate have spoken,” said Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate. “Now, we hope the president is listening.”

President Bush has said he will veto any legislation containing a withdrawal date. Many of the other countries who had troops in Iraq have already pulled out or have plans to do so in the near future; however, the United States is divided on this issue. Should the US set a withdrawal date or not?

Setting a benchmark to shoot for is not necessarily a bad thing. We do run the risk of leaving the door open for increased terrorist attacks on the Iraqi people and the possibility of some crazy dictator swooping in after we leave; however, this is not how the rest of the World sees it. Many claim that much of the violence in Iraq is because of the American presence there. They claim that the violence will stop once the Americans leave. I personally don't think this is the case as 90% of the terrorist attacks are against the Iraqi people and not the Americans. I think we have done what we can and it's up to the Iraqi people to take charge of their country. If that means a civil war then that's just the way it has to be. I hope the good guys win.

Why pull out of Iraq? The war on terrorism is NOT over. They are still bombing the entire world. That is why we are fighting over there.

How about this, when the TSA relaxes its strip searches at our airports, then we know we can bring our troops home, because there won't be anymore terrorist attacks. Then, the entire world can relax it airport security rules.

A timeline needs to be laced with bench mark language. It should include needed things to be accomplished before the proposed date. If it is we should leave. If the need security is not in place then only blame the Iraqis for not stepping it up. But until then keep the funds coming to support the mission. The Dems drumbeat is weekness. We are Americans. If we unite we cannot fail. If we retreat (not redeploy mr murtha) We face certain future trouble. If we leave too early. I fear for the people of Iraq. The good guys will be killed. The bad guys will fill the void.

The War on terrorism will never be won because it is impossible; we are fighting a war on anger and hatred which will only grow in size the more we fight it. Any person who thinks that we should fight until the war on terrorism is over is either very ignorant or a dullard and should stick to commenting on simpler issues.

This is a war that has gone on too long. We need to take hold of our grounds and our soldiers and bring all of them home safely. Money should be spent on our own country. Too many lives are at stake. Let's just end this once and for all and send our troops home to their families.

Without benchmarks and a timeline they will never "stand up" and we will never "stand down".
