15,000 Troops Could Stay Longer in Iraq Email This Story Print This Story

Defense officials are looking at the idea of a maximum 120-day extension for five active duty brigades that would otherwise come home in the coming months — four ground units and one aviation combat brigade totaling roughly 15,000 troops, the official said. The plan would have to be approved by Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

Getting turned around after spending a year in a combat zone is not very pleasant but these soldiers just suck it up and keep going. It’s the soldier’s families who are the ones who are hurt the most when there is a delay in re-deployment. To them we can only say we feel their pain and support them as their soldier’s have been supporting us for so very long.

I just heard on NPR that all Army personnel already deployed or sced to be deployed were looking at their 12-month tour being extended to 15 months. They said this definitively, does anyone know anything about this?

I am glad to extend as long as the Army pays me bonuses for those extended months. I also want my unit to take care of me when I redeploy by giving me 60 days of free leave so I can spend time with my family. We all deserved those 60 days of free leave since the first 5 months of redeployment, we don't do anything at all. Why not give the time back to the soldiers and his family instead of bringing them into work to do nothing at all.
