Draft or no draft? Email This Story Print This Story

Despite all of this country's successes with conscription, most notably World War I and World War II, the subject has become taboo. Its mere mention, let alone its serious consideration, are forbidden in American political quarters. This unwillingness to consider using our greatest element of national power—our people—reflects a stunning strategic myopia about our national security and what will be necessary to guarantee it.

This is a very intriguing discussion between two former Army officers both with experience in Iraq. They point out the strengths, weaknesses, and history of a military draft. What are your thoughts on a draft?

there won't be a draft because the voting age has been 18 since 1971. most Americans (especially those of drafting age) would have to enthusiastically support any military effort to allow a draft. obviously that is currently not the case. 18-25 year-olds would turn out at the polls in record numbers if a draft was implented now, and politicians know this.

why have a draft? if someone doesnt have enough balls to stand up for their country why force them. we dont need the free loaders to come pollute our military what so ever! & i understand some people have extinuating circumstances on why they dont serve, so this is not to be taken as an attack on them.

My son voluntarily loined the armed services, he deploys tomorrow to Iraq. He doesn't want to fight in a war that seems to have no end, but the ultimate goal is to keep thterrosit and the war away from home and that is why he is there. I pray for the asfe return of all our men and woman. It is amazing that we all want to the united states privlages but so many not willing to support thier country. I am 35 and a woman, and i would be there otmorrow, if it meant that my family at home would stay protected.

But did you know,
That when it snows,

The light that you shine can be seen.

Baby,
I might compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey.
Ooh,
The more I get of you
Stranger it feels, yeah.
And now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the grey.

yeah but i am not sure about the draft as a good idea, we do not want the smart kids to be in the army, nor do we want our future c.e.o.'s or the people who tried in high school to get drafted also.

We already have those "smart kids" in the Army. Who do you think runs all those high tech weapons. Today's Army is a lot different from years ago when you just gave everyone a gun.
