This war the U.S. is responsible for over 600,000 deaths. These days, no other group, nation comes close to the amount the U.S. has killed and those killers are people like you John. Resources are finite and limited and perhaps the U.S. thought it outweighed the lives of the 3,000 dead on 911 to try to confiscate middle eastern oil. Also plausible. Either way, the U.S. has made some BAD policy decisions, which the next generations to come will pay for. This country is already weakening slowly but surely economically and this has resulted from decisions made by the government NOT in the best interests of its citizens.

I just check iraqbodycount.org and they have the count at 72,537 – 79,128 since 2003. Makes you wonder who to believe. I work with statistics and I can tell you that they can be manipulated to say anything you want them to. In a debate about such a widely controversial subject such as this you can find any types of facts and figures to back up just about anything you want to say.

And obviously, the U.S. will deny high numbers, because the U.S. has invaded and a high death toll that is obviously caused because of the U.S. invasion, is not in the U.S. interest. So there is inherent bias in numbers, if any provided by the U.S. Also keep in mind, the U.S. has expressly stated they do not keep a record of civilians killed. (Gee I wonder why).

Some history for you: Iraq was the site of the very first civilization of peoples. It developed between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers; they were called the Sumerians. Some of the very basic fundamentals of laws were developed there that we still use those fundamentals today in America (such as in contract laws). It is an area rich in history and culture (or was) and you should keep that in mind if you go. And yes it is time to leave Iraq and now let them clean up the mess we left behind. Because if we are still there, we are still part of the mess and part of the problem. There is absolutely no conceivable way that we can now fix Iraq. They must God Willing do that on their own. Karen, if you are so sure that you are right, and that a great wrong is being commited, is it not logical for you to try to intelligently and respectful try to communicate your point to others in the hope of them realizing that you have a point? I have had drinks with the ambassador of Jordan to Japan and with the first secretary of the Turkish embassy. I have also pulled ME men off of a women that they thought to abuse because of her clothing. I have dated Muslim women from Iran and Africa. So don't tell me I don't know their culture. I have heard these women complain about the restrictive laws in their home countries. I shared an apartment with a man from Bangladesh who taught me that All religions are one and that all have the same fundamental flaw. They think they have the answer and every one else is wrong. He also taught me that Islam is not tolerant of other religions and that for many conversion by the sword is better than conversion by peace.

I have seen wars desolation and I have come back to see love. I have seen the lives it ruins and I have seen the hope it brings to those that are liberated.

We fight on so that those who will never understand or truly appreciate freedom can at least enjoy it.

So while me and you may disagree philosophically, we are both human and I forgive that in you. Just remember the next time you want to complain about whatever it is you want to complain about. That you are practicing your freedom, brought to you courtesy of the American military man.

Alright so let me start by sayin that I have takin the time to read everyones post and I believe I have a pretty good idea of where everyone stands. Now I am friends with some of you people and I have no clue who others of you are, but none the less it seems we all stand fast to our beliefs.

Did you ever hear about the news paper guy, Religion: Shiite, in Baghdad that was put feet first into his newspaper press because a week earlier he had printed an article that said somethin along the lines of that the Ba'ath Party were "evil". Here i'll give you an easy one, did you hear the the one about the Iraqi female, Religion: Kurd, that was killed by her own family, by stoning and burning, because she refused to have an arranged marriage. Now these are just the stories that I am aware of from the M.E. I may not be the most well educated person around but I believe I have been taught, raised, and learned well enough to know the difference between wrong and right in life, and to me none of those stories seem right.
The final statement for you Karen is this, War may not be the best way to solve problems in life, but as you seem to be a history buff, hasn't it been used many times over in the last 5,000 years or so. I believe much as many of you do that we are there to do a great amount of good. We have taken a terrible man from power with the hopes of building a better Iraq. I wasn't going to write again this weekend. It was 6:30 am when I started to write this and still haven't slept. I turned on CNN for a light hearted interview with Joyce Behar, figuring it would bore me to sleep and it didn't. Low and behold after that ended, a show came on called Lifting the Vail. There were actual interviews with Afghanistan women. I was mortified to find these woman burning themselves out of utter despair. As some woman were allowed to speak it was so obvious that the stories there are much worse then we are all privy to. I could go on stating many stories they spoke of, but I was hoping Karen would manage to find a re-airing of this program so she can see things aren't as peachy as she claims.
