Free Texas Tuition for Immigrant Soldiers Email This Story Print This Story

Immigrants who served on active duty in the U.S. military are once again eligible for free tuition at public colleges and universities in Texas, local media report. The Dallas Morning News says the attorney general's office reversed itself by ruling yesterday that legal permanent residents who served in the U.S. military are eligible for education benefits under the state's Hazlewood Act.

If an immigrant has proved themselves by serving in our military, there is absolutely no reason to deny them any services. In most cases these immigrants go on to become American citizens. Serving in the military to earn your citizenship is the best way to insure that it will be valuable to that person in the future. Is there any reason that we shouldn't allow these soldiers to receive free tuition?

yes. if we provide soley immigrants free tuition, then are we providing the same benefit to soldiers that aren't immigrants? it sounds like we're only providing for immigrants that served the armed forces. also, are they honorably discharged? what if they only did a few months of service, or what if they barely made it out of basic training when they were discharged, are they still provided free tuition? i believe there should be some regulation that goes along with this for some clarity.

Helen to answer your questions. yes anyone who serves in the military fulfilling their full contract with an honorable discharge from the military is garunteed a free college education in Texas and a few other states. The only thing we have to pay for is books everything else is covered. To get this benefit though you have to be a resident of the state prior to enlisting. This and a lot of other parts of the military become a clearer and are explained in more detail to those of us in the military. I hope i answered all your questions for you.

So, we're going to provide free tuition to the immigrants but our own US Soldiers can't get tuition for free. I'm sorry, this is bull crap!!!! Our son, who has been in the ARMY for almost 4 years can't even get extra training or schooling he's asked for. If he re-enlists they'll let him go to more training. He's only trying to better himself, as a Sgt. Sniper school, out because you haven't signed those papers yet! Yes, he has the GI bill for when he's out of the military for schooling but wants to do some things now. This truly upsets me as a Mother.

Mom of a Soldier. I understand why your mad but your talkin about 2 completely different types of schooling. Schooling for your job is difficult to get but this is talking about once your out. Only something like 4 states offer this to the personnel in the military. Just like my home state of CA doesn't offer it for me. It sucks but Im also using tuition assistance while I am in. have your son contact the Army College office to find out more about this.
