Fewer High school Grads Enlist Email This Story Print This Story

The percent of Army recruits with a high school diploma dropped last year, continuing a trend that has worsened since the start of the Iraq war, according to a report released Tuesday. National Priorities Project, a research group that analyzes federal data, found that nearly 71 percent of Army recruits graduated from high school in the 2007 budget year. It based its findings on data it obtained from the Defense Department through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Could this have anything to do with the fact that the high school graduation rate has dropped? There are more students dropping out of high school now than before the Iraq war. Some of the blame for the dumbing down of our society can be placed at the feet of TV and lack of parenting. Is America experiencing a decline in education and appreciation of intelligence?

I don't think it's a lack of education that is keeping people from enlisting, it is a lack of respect! These people have no idea what freedom they really have and at what cost it took!!

I feel every student, upon graduation should have to attend boot camp & serve our country for atleast 2 years. Young adults would have more appreciation for everything & there would be less individuals in trouble. I also think it would help if some of the recruiters were younger. When our son finished BCT he worked with our hometown recruiters, going to all the surrounding schools. The kids all wanted to speak with him. He helped recruit many young people for them. Freedom is a gift given to us in the US & our younger generation doesn't fully realize what our military is doing for them.

People are getting smarter - no reasonable person wants to die for lies. It so shameful that "mom of soldier's" dumb kid is killing and invading for racist lies.

But on another point, the education in this country is declining, past high school. The costs of college education are skyrocketing making it so that poor people like soldier of mom can't educate her kids. So that is why you have a shrinking middle class and poor brainwashed people believing that they are killing for "freedom (that means nothing", when they are actually killing to make Bush and the elite richer. Gotta feel sorry for the beginning of the declination of this country...

The education system in the united states is terrible. We are the richest country in the world and we can barely educate our youth! College is more expensive than ever before, and we are seeing more and more the gap between the rich and poor.
