A judge known for creative sentencing has ordered three Spanish-speaking men to learn English or go to jail. The men, who faced prison for criminal conspiracy to commit robbery, can remain on parole if they learn to read and write English, earn their GEDs and get full-time jobs, Luzerne County Judge Peter Paul Olszewski Jr. said. The men, Luis Reyes, Ricardo Dominguez and Rafael Guzman-Mateo, plus a fourth defendant, Kelvin Reyes-Rosario, all needed translators when they pleaded guilty Tuesday. "Do you think we are going to supply you with a translator all of your life?" the judge asked them.
Hooray for the judge. To many times miscommunication has caused problems between immigrants and locals. Often government agencies offer services in several languages negating the will to learn the language of the country these people are enjoying living in. This judge, with his ruling is forcing these men to assimilate into the community they live in. The military should pay attention as it has been rumored that some higher ups want to offer enlistment to non English speaking persons. Do you think speaking English should be a prerequisite to joining the military or receiving benefits?
YES i think it should be a prerequisite to learn engish when joining the military or receiving benefits. I wouldnt want to be on a battle field with someone who couldnt understand a simple comand. hmm what a great way to get our men and women killed!
