The Army is weighing in on writer Stephen King’s remark about literacy and the military that drew the ire of conservative critics this week. King came under fire from a blogger for what he told students while stressing the importance of reading at the Library of Congress on April 4: “The fact is if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don’t, then you’ve got the Army, Iraq, I don’t know, something like that,” King said.

Isn't it amazing to see the people in America who put down our military men and women. As an author you would think King could do a little research before he puts his foot in his mouth. It is obvious that King has no interaction with anyone in the military at all or he would know that his statement was false. Do you think Stephen King should apologize for his statement?

My son is in the Army and was a National Honor Society graduate of his High School. He is bright and intelligent and is proudly serving in our military including a year-plus tour in Iraq.

I am very proud of our men and women in the Armed Forces and for Mr. King to make that remarks is truly ignorant of him. I have been a huge Stephen King fan in the past, but could never again bring myself to purchase a book by him knowing how he feels about our military including my own son.
