Deserter Deported From Canada Email This Story Print This Story

A U.S. Army specialist who fled Fort Bragg for Canada after learning his unit was to be deployed to Iraq was ordered deported Wednesday. Jeremy Hinzman, 29, is likely to be court-martialed when he returns to the U.S. and could face up to five years in prison. Hinzman said Canada’s Border Services Agency ordered him to leave the country by Sept. 23, and he would be handed over to U.S. authorities.

In a move that drips poetic justice Canada deports one of the U.S. Army deserters hiding in their country. Iraq sucks and is a loss! I've wasted two years of my life there! i have a bad shoulder, bad knee and terrible memories! I'm sad that he got caught! If he had been deployed in Iraq before then I don't blame him one bit! How many of you have seen your friends die before your eyes!?

I've done my service and I'll never do it again!

Actually by the book they could kill him for being a deserter during a time of war! But with that aside I say lets here his story like SGT. says he may have very understandable reasons and well unless you've been there you can't really cast any stones! But hey, I haven't been there yet! but I will within the next 18mos.

Im a Marine heading into the Army 10th Mtn to be specific, and I can tell u that for the most part, I really doubt hell get the court martial, he can say personality disorder if he really wants to and say the army screwed him up with his deployments, thats why he went UA/AWOL. Were all in things together no matter what, and if a person wants to go OFP then so be it. RAH gentlemen.

ps think of this as the dont ask dont tell policy the military has, same deal in the end.

If you flee this Country to avoid military service then you should NEVER be allowed back in this Country again for any reason. If you desert this Country in the time of a military conflict you deserve whatever happens to you!!! Afterall YOU volunteered to join the US ARMY.
