A U.S. soldier convicted of humiliating and abusing Iraqi prisoners said, in remarks made public late Sunday, she knew of "worse things" happening at Abu Ghraib and insisted military commanders were fully aware of what was going on in Iraq's infamous jail.
The comments, made by Private First Class Lynndie England in her first post-court marshal interview, contradicted assertions by top Pentagon officials that a small group of out-of-control soldiers were responsible for abuse at Abu Ghraib, and that however repulsive that mistreatment was, it did not amount to torture.
Odd timing, don't you think? She had the chance to save herself with this "information" during her trail, and I'm sure proving that worse things were happening would indeed help her case. She could have gave up names and information or even gone to the press (like she is now) and put pressure on the Government that could have meant she could have cut a deal. Or maybe the Government was ready for just such a move and blocked her from doing so making sure she couldn't tell until after, at which time the information would look at least a bit suspect.
