Sanctuary City Vs. Home Of The Brave Email This Story Print This Story

War, what is it good for?
Absolutely nothing.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean a soldier should not face repercussions for running from it.
I like Bellingham, it’s just the right amount of funky and laid back for me to call it “home,” but there are some times when I feel like a man without a city.
This is one of those times.
There’s been a lot of talk as of late about Bellingham becoming a “sanctuary city,” a place where soldiers who have chosen to go absent without leave (AWOL) can find amnesty and not live in fear of being turned in to the military by local police.
Perhaps it’s because I was weaned on a healthy dose of John Wayne movies, but I have a healthy respect for anyone willing to enlist in the service of the military; as well as a lack of respect for those who choose to flee from that service.
Regardless of whether a soldier may agree with what they are fighting for or not, soldiers make a commitment when they enlist. I don’t think people who break that commitment should get a reprieve.

Is there anything more to be said? Anyone who enlisted after 9/11 knew they were joining the military during a time of war and would probably be deployed. If they choose to not follow through with their obligations then they should suffer the consequences. What should be done with deserters?
