Casket Photo Ban Lifted Email This Story Print This Story

Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Thursday lifted the ban on media coverage of the flag-draped caskets of American war dead being returned to Dover Air Force Base, Del. “After receiving input from a number of sources, including all the military services, and organizations representing military families, I have decided that the decision regarding media coverage of the dignified transfer process at Dover should be made by those most directly affected: on an individual basis by the families of the fallen,” Gates said at a Pentagon news conference. “We ought not presume to make that decision in their place,” he said.

Respect for the fallen? Respect for the families of the fallen? Caving in to media pressure? If 20 of the fallen come home and one of those families objects does that mean that none of the coffins can be photographed. This was an irresponsible decision made to kowtow to a press that helped elect a president. Should this practice of photographing the coffins of our returning fallen be allowed?

You know what I'D do? I'd go even further and show their remains. Just like Emmett Till's mother did at HIS funeral. Maybe, just maybe, then, people in this country and especially the young, gullible kids, could see the real results of war and may not blindly follow the gov't and support endless no-win genocides like the "good Germans" of the past did follwing Hitler.

Blackie: I have lost family members in this and other wars and your lack of respect for those that serve is appalling. There is no such thing as a good war but there will always be the necessity for those braver than YOU to step up and defend their country. What it comes down to is that they have risen high enough on the ladder of community to realize that there is no greater love than to put your self between your beloved homeland and wars desolation. Just remember that the wars we are fighting are against a group of religious fanatics that would not hesitate to slit your throat even though you agree with them.

Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men.

Wake up and realize that there are people out there willing to kill everyone who doesn't live like them, including you.
