Clinton Invites Iran To Afghan Talks Email This Story Print This Story

Setting up the prospect of its first face-to-face encounter with Iran, the Obama administration has proposed a major conference on Afghanistan this month that would include Iran among the invited countries, said the U.S. secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton. "We presented the idea of what is being called a big-tent meeting, with all the parties who have a stake and an interest in Afghanistan," she said at a news conference in Brussels on Thursday after a meeting of NATO foreign ministers. "If we move forward with such a meeting, it is expected that Iran would be invited, as a neighbor of Afghanistan."

Let's also invite the fox to help us inspect the chicken coop security system. While we are at it we can invite North Korea to help inspect China's human rights violations. What could Iran possible inject into the meetings but incendiary rhetoric and constant bad mouthing of the U.S. Are we now going to present our selves as the United States of the Meek? Have we already forgotten that there is a reason we have not had diplomatic relations with this country in so long? She we invite Iran to these talks without setting some types of stipulations?

Iran is already so involved in Afghanistan. Perhaps from these meetings we can learn exactly how. I could see it as a benefit potentially.
