American Al Qaeda In Somalia Email This Story Print This Story

Two young Americans who left their homes to join an Al Qaeda-linked terrorist group in Somalia held a rare “press conference” in southern Somalia on Sunday, saying they want to be killed "for the sake of God," according to a U.S. law enforcement official and a report posted on a Somali news Web site. For several months the FBI has been investigating at least 20 Somali-American men from the Minneapolis area and elsewhere in the United States who traveled to war-torn Somalia to join the terrorist group al-Shabaab, which has been warring with the moderate Somali government since 2006.

This story brings to mind many questions. What is the residency status of these men in the US? If they are known to be members of Al Qaeda then why are they being let back in the US? Can they be charged with treason? Technically they are not bearing arms against US forces but they are self proclaimed members of an anti-American Islamo-Terrorist group. What are the repercussions of publicly announcing this allegiance and should they ever be allowed to re-enter the U.S.? Would they be planning terrorist acts to perform in the U.S.?
