Some interesting watching for us Brits. Here's an advance notice. May be give rise to some chat-chat.
After the War
Tue 23 Aug, 9:00 pm - 9:50 pm 50mins BBC 2
Hirohito
In the history of the 20th century there are few figures more controversial than Emperor Hirohito of Japan. With many documents deliberately destroyed and others held in Imperial archives, the issue of Hirohito's responsibility for Japanese wartime conduct remains shrouded in mystery.
Over 14 years the armies of Japan killed millions in the name of the Emperor. To some, Hirohito was a war criminal who escaped trial. To others he was the helpless puppet of a military dictatorship.
Since his death, new evidence has come to light prompting a re-examination. This programme seeks to examine the extent to which Emperor Hirohito can be considered responsible for the war. How did Hirohito evade prosecution and retain his throne?
Contains some scenes viewers may find upsetting. [S]

I watched it and it was pretty good actually. It explained how the American's decided that Hirohito should be cleared of all blame to help keep the Japanese people from rebelling. At the time the Emperor was very popular in Japan and America decided that too execute their Emperor would provoke outrage amonhst the general population making plans for democracy impossible.
Instead blame was shifted to the PM and his main generals who were hung. The program challenged the idea that Hirohito was merely a puppet by providing some of the last remaining records from meetings with his PM and generals. Most of the other records were mysteriously burned.
A good watch, a shame you two missed it.
