Ok.. My question is:
If you are housed on a base with 2-3 kids and a wife. What type of extra pay do you receive? Housing? does this cover electric and everything free if housed on the base? Do you receive more pay for kids or not?

Any help would be appreciated. :)

ive never lived on a base, yet, but have researched it. from what i understand for most part the house is rent free. you do however have to pay for your electric bills. if you live off base, you get a housing allowance that helps for you to pay rent or your mortgate on a home. how much depends on the area you live in. you do get extra pay for dependants. for an example, when my husband was away at basic and ait, he was a E1. we have 3 children and live in indiana. i got around $900 for first of the month and $800 the middle of the month. that was his pay, housing allowance, & family seperation (the kiddy kicker). we also had full medical insurance and we both have life insurance.

They are only making soldiers pay for utilities a a few pilot programs where the housing on post is privatized. In most places you do not pay for rent or utilities. I am living on post now, and have done so at my last duty station as well.
If you have a family you also get Basic Allowance for Subsidies.
The Army takes care of us!;)

Thank you Hasan,
Do you have a family living on base? I would have 2-3 kids, one will be graduating soon. I was trying to get a good idea of what would be paid by the Army and what I would be responsable for. On the Basic Allowance for subsidies, how much does a person get? Does this depend on dependents?? On the "Pilot Programs" Do they compensate you for having to pay utilities?

I am just trying to get an understanding of how it all works. I have family and I need to be sure if I join they are alright. At the moment I can work how ever much I need to to pay the bills. I realize if I enlist I would not be able to work a second job to make ends meet. If that makes any sense?

My family currently lives on post. We pay no rent or utilities. This is still the standard thing.
regarding BAS:

I am not sure how those programs work at this point. They are EXTREMELY unpopular since this is one of the most coveted military benefits being jeopardized. rest assured that the Army will take care of you and the family, you will not have to worry about being cold, hungry, or homeless!

Hey there,

My husband just enlisted graduated from BCT and is in AIT. We have two kids... we are not living on post yet... we are getting roughly $1200 per check. We are in Ohio. You get your basic needs taken care of. It will be less if we live on post because a housing allowance will not be given since it is free to live on post. SO! figure $797 less and we will not get separation pay... which I think is $250 (??)... so basically we you don't have extra money, but you have money for all you need! The best part is... everyone is in the same boat! So you don't have to keep up with the Jones'

If you need anything else let me know.

When I was in the Navy we got money if we lived off base. It all depends on where you live. One city is different from another. You also get food money. But that is only for you. Money also depends on rank.
