I'm not sure if anyone can assist me in this. I am a single parent, wanting to join the army active duty. From what I understand, to join active duty, I will have to legally give up custody of my daughter until after I am out of basic and AIT and then have the person I give my custody to legally delegate custody back to myself. The recruiter in my local office has researched this and stated that I could always go reserve (not having to give custody of my daughter to a family member) and then request to go active duty. I prefer just going in active, but understand that this is not possible, so assuming I go in reserve, how difficult is it to become active? How long might this take? Also, is it likely that I will be able to continue in the same duty assignment as I am in as a reservist? Any help is greatly appreciated.

my husband joined reserve. when he came back he had to wait six months before he could turn in papers to go active. three months later, we were still waiting. now his unit has been put on alert to go to Iraq, which makes all paperwork for that unit, including his papers for active duty. i have heard about the having to sign your child over thing. click on my name, go to all my post and skim through them. i have talked to a girl probably a month or so ago and she was single with daughter going active i believe, but i think all she had to do was sign a POA over to her mom, not give her legal custody. you may be able to get her name and contact her for more info on that part. sorry to give you homework, but its the best i can do!:)

Sounds awesome. I don't mind the research. Anything helps. It is a big deal to be asked to sign over custody of your child. Thanks a million.

I consulted my Brigade Lawyer, and a civilian lawyer.
What needs ot be done is you msut give up PHYSICAL custody of your child while you are in boot camp and AIT. You still retain legal custody.
