If I join the guard do I have to be a "weekend warrior"?

National Guard is a part-time force, unless you are on title 10 orders, you will serve one weekend a month, two weekends a year. So, short of deployments, schools and state needed services .. yes, you'll be part-time.
There are some positions in the Guard that are full time, those are mostly admin, however.
If you want to be active, join the regular Army.

The regular Army can always use communicators. You can probably wrangle a 3 year enlistment & now the Army has 2 year enlistments starting after your training so figure in your BCT & AIT & add 2 years to that. I'm not sure there are any bonuses available for that program however. If you enlist for 4 years & ship within 90 days(I believe) you may qualify for a $20,000 bonus plus up to $50,000 towards education when you get out. After your enlistment is over you can always join the National Guard to finish out your 8 year obligation. A good part-time job while still serving as a soldier. Then as Tacky says there's always Title 10 if you want a full-time job with the Guard.
If you join up in the regular Army you can go into the delayed entry program & stay home for up to a year. You'll probably go in as an E2 after passing a DEP PT test, higher rank if you can get a few others to join & higher rank yet for college credits.(not sure if you need a bachelor degree)

Army National Guard is a great program. Like the men have said....their are full time jobs in the Army Guard..Mostly all Admin. The recruiters, is one and just the other day their was an opening for a parts guy position working in the flight bays.....in the stock room. One soldier, in the unit left his full time job and took the position.
That job was picked up in minutes because that's a great environment to be working in.....There's electrical and structural parts along with rotor parts that need to be inventoried and kept in stock at all times. The bay jobs are the cool. Keep in mind one thing. You will get deployed with the Army Guard.....This unit has been deployed many times.....Theirs a saying and it goes like this....One weekend a month my A**......
Anyways, theirs also the split option program which is great. It allows you to get your Bct and Ait out of the way with rank and your assigned to your unit while your going to school. Once you graduated from college you move into your unit and can plan to be a warrant officer, in your mos.You have to sign for eight years for any bonus or split option programs. You can go active from there....It's a great program. Good luck dude. Stay cool Stay Army.
