I have a recently aquired a soldier for a son-in-law.
He is currently deployed for 16 months.
I'm confused about military pay, etc. because my daughter is having major financal difficulties. Her husband's answers as to where the money goes doesn't sound right to me, but I can't challenge this since I know absolutely nothing about it! HELP!
One of my first questions: Does $50 per pay period get deducted automatically for charitable contributions? Is this really a requirement or done on a voluntary basis?

from my experience with recieving my husbnads checks, they get direct deposited into my account around the 1 and 15 of every month. ( he choose direct deposit, they can also recieve there checks i think) on the LES form it will explain all deductions taken out of the check. i do not recall anything about charities on any of his checks. being married there should be family seperation pay once a month, and if they live off base BAH, basic housing alowance, once a month.

I know nothing about charitable contributions... I would think anything like that would be voluntary. He may also have money coming out for addition GI bill money. She can view his LES online with the breakdowns here:

Ok first off, on the Charity, It is volunteer based yes, there two types of them one is Called AER(Army Emergency Relief Fund), Basically it is a program where you as a soldier give money to the fund, and then when another soldier has a finicial problem that they didnt cuase themselves, say like your enigine died in there car and cant afford to get it repaired they would go to the AER office and get either a grant or a loan from AER to get it fixed, Deppending on there ability to pay back would decide whether or not they have to pay it back. It truely is a great program, everything that is donated goes back the army soldiers none of it goes to the ppl that work for AER that is all paid for bye DOD( Department of Defense).
The other one is Called CFC(Combined Federal Campaign) it is one that Allows the Soldier to pick a Program from a big list such Boy's and Girls club of America and donate money to them to help out our country.
In either case the soldier is given the option to donate as little or as much as they wish to these programs going from $1 per month up to what ever they can afford. these programs happen every 6 months and deduct the money each month from the soldiers monthly pay for a 6 month period then they start all over again.
Heres the catch though, In the Army we have Volunteer things, However In the Army we dont use that word very often, We use a word called Voluntold( you can figure out what that means) and if you cant, its is This thing or duty is done on a volunteer status but if you better do it or else.....
Hope this Helps, Also try this link http://www.lewis.army.mil/9FB/soldier/les.htm
