My son who is in the 3rd Batt., 75th Ranger Regt. is getting off of Active Duty on 19 May '08. He's already signed up for a Reserve unit. He'll be an instructor in the 1st Batt (Rec), 134 Regt, 88th RRC. It's a Reserve Reception Battalion. For those unfamiliar with the U.S. Army that's the place recruits are first sent upon entry into the Army & before they start BCT. They're taught rudimentary Army Drill & Ceremony, Army rank structure & basic Army discipline amongst many other things. That's the place where they're given their haircuts, shots, their service records are started, etc. They also do uptraining of activated Reserve & Guard units prior to their deployment & he thinks possibly ROTC training missions. If I'm not mistaken that's what the unit where I served as an Active Army Advisor to the Reserves became. It used to be 7th Brigade, 84th Division (TNG) & we had the exact same mission with the 5091st Reception Battalion attached to us.

For a 3 year contract he gets a $10,000 bonus & a 2 year non-deployment guarantee. Not too bad. That'll give him less than a year left on his 8 year obligation in which he's excused from any other reserve duty.

He said tha hardest thing he'll have to do is stop wearing his Tan Beret!

He attended his 1st Reserve drill this last Saturday. He's not used to the layed-back attitude but understands it. He said it wasn't much different than the times he was training with non-Ranger units. Rangers take discipline to a different level.

It so happened that Saturday was family day & the afternoon was spent at a picnic.

So far the guys he met seem to be friendly but they're expecting good things from him.

In September they have an FTX at Ft. McCoy, WI. They'll do range fire & take their PT test plus some field training. He's planning on staying after the weekend to attend Instructor School.

They didn't get a whole lot of in-processing done because of Family Day but they told him it'd all be handled during the week.

He's up for SSG as soon as he gets through Instructor School.
