Your 1SG speaks the truth. While in the IRR you can be called to active duty as an individual. In a unit you won't get activated unless your unit gets called up. I have a friend who is a Milwaukee copper & in the IRR who got called to active duty for 15 months. After his uptraining he deployed with an Active Army artillery unit. With the present slow activity of FA units he spent his deployment patrolling the streets of Iraq. The Army uses that system to fill the ranks of Active Army units that are not up to strength.
Best to stay in a TPU than take your chances. If your reserve unit gets called up you'll at least know who you'll be going with & what you'll do.

Good luck to you, Otis. It's your decision & you must know what's best for you.
