My son will be going to boot camp in 3 weeks. He has picked his MOS and was told he will go for his training for aprox. 25 weeks after bootcamp. How likely is it that he will not get to go to his specialty training and be deployed instead? I am hearing all kinds of stories of being sent to iraq immediately after boot camp. This is upsetting me as you can imagine. What exactly should I expect?

He will go to Basic Combat Training and then head to his Advanced Individual Training (AIT). He won't be assigned to a regular active duty unit without being MOS qualified. Rumors constantly circulate about how fast you get shipped off but they dont' ship them off to war without training them.
Now...after he graduates his AIT and signs into his permament duty station, he may get assigned to a unit that is already deployed or going to deploy soon and he could get sent off shortly after signing in, that happens all the time.
He will be trained before he goes off anywhere.

I have read that the President is going to start downsizing this Sept. That is hopeful for all of us who have children in training. I hope by the time my son gets out of AIT a plan will be impletmented and in place for bringing the troops home, not sending them over there.

Girl... wars and rumors of wars... I would love to think our military will have some quiet years ahead but given all the political tensions right now... it won't be long before we go back. LOL

We might downsize but I don't see us pulling out anytime soon, I don't believe Iraq is stable enough for that quite yet. I'd like to see my husband's generation get the job done so my children and grandchildren don't have to go back.

Yeah, that won't happen. I agree with Fireball. The way things are going our military won't get a break. Don't get your hopes up. I'm not.
