I'm presuming that the Yank army is like our one, with trade schemes and other enlistment periods, so I can safely say that if you join up and do a trade, like I've done, you'll probably spend at least 4 - 6 years in. I joined the Aus army as a telecommunications technician and I'm in for 8 years. For a non-technical trade, i.e grunt, combat engineer, etc your minimum period would be 2 - 3 years. I'm not quite sure how it goes for chocco soldiers (territorials/reservists) but they're called chocco for a reason (chocolate soldiers, melt under pressure) and your best bet is to join the army and get a trade skill under your belt, so if you leave the army after your initial obligation period, at least you have something to fall back on.
