There is a TV programme on at the moment called "boot camp" where these drill instuctors spend all day balling at some poor recruit who hasnt even opened his mouth!
In my opinion this is no way of creating good disciplined soldiers... is the american basic training like this or are they acting up to the cameras?

its not only about discipline... its about making sure that the human inside the uniform
can handle some stress.. some of us can't, and that can raise the list of casualties
a lot if the situation is bad.
Finnish army is quite diciplined.. even tough it is mostly a conscript army..
after the minimium of 6 months service, most men are quite capable soldiers.
some dont cope with it so they move to civil service.. but this percent is actually
quite small (excuding the people who go to civil service directly).

the plan is to scream at the recruit and see if he can put up with it....if he can the officer builds him up his own way
oldest trick in the book
