Going active Reserve...

I was just wondering, i'm still in AIT and everything as a 42L which is an Administrative Specialist... i was just wondering when i go back to my home town and start working for my unit, if it's pretty easy to go active reserve, cause i heard normally you have to sort of wait for a slot and only if it's needed but, that recently they need so many people full time that it's really easy to get a spot, if someone could get me straight on this it'd be of much appreciation.

Yes, you do have to wait for a slot open for your MOS and rank. Depending upon your unit there may be many or just a couple. Usually you have to apply for these positions somewhat similar to a civilian applying for a federal job. Some units are more lax on this than others. Talk with you chain of command once you are finished with your training. If there is a position available you may be able to apply. Keep in mind though, that these positions usually go to people with more seniority, or time in service.

My suggestion would be to let your chain of command know of your interests, but be ready to prove yourself as a reliable soldier before they are willing to put you in for such a position.

the other option is to try to get on active duty. That decision, too, is up to your current chain of command. You also may be required to spend at least 6 months in your reserve unit before being considered to be released from your reserve unit so that you can enlist in the Army full time (active duty). Active duty Reserve slots are generally extremely hard to get. Usually reserved for prior service active duty with many years of experience. Your MOS (Administrative Specialist) greatly increases your chances of getting an AR slot though. So, I wouldn't rule it out as a possibility.

Until what age can you join the Reserves? Can you join from oversees, or do you have to physically be in the US?

From what I've heard, the army is phasing out 42Ls. I haven't seen a memo on that or anything, but that is the scuttlebutt.

concerning joining from another country, there is a list of places that you can just join from. also, if you're a citizen abroad, I believe there are recruiters on most posts overseas for dependents of military members.

from what i know of you dont need to wait for a slot you need to wait 6 months from the starting date in you unit b4 you can go active duty/active guard reserve
