It's interesting to note that the HIV/AIDS post is in the "Politics" forum. It's one of those "political" diseases unlike cancer or diabetes I guess.

Drug and vaccine trials must go through a multi-stage process before being approved for use; at present there is only 1 vaccine in Stage 3 trials, and that is The RV 144 study in Thailand. This study combines AIDSVAX with Aventis Pasteur ALVAC-HIV canarypox vector, known as "vCP1521". On September 24, 2009 it was announced that the combination succeeded in reducing the infection rate in trial, with 31.2% effectiveness.

Progress? Perhaps. Far better would be to see a lot more people take responsibility for their own sexual health. We're doing better at this nowadays. In Germany, my platoon made carrying condoms mandatory, and your Jimmy hat was an inspectable item. At formation, 'Everybody hold 'em up!". Some of the wives were none too happy about this, but we cut our STD rate down considerably.
