Default Sleep Disorder & the military

Hi, I'm definitely new here. But I could use some guidance, as the only information I could find on this on the net was about 6 years old.

I have recently been diagnosed with narcolepsy. Not a severe case, but one that will require some type of medication (not yet determined). I have been told that this can get me kicked out of the military. I've also been told that if I fail to inform my superiors, it cold land me 10 years in jail and a max fine of $100,000. I'm really uncertain which way to go. The guard is putting me through school. I just recently transferred over from another branch of service just to be able to attend school. And (although not contracted) have been participating in ROTC. Does anyone have any guidance or advice on this matter? If so, I could really use it.

Thanks.

It's not a terrible case, but I've been told it will get worse as I'm only in my early 20's. I have fallen asleep standing up before and while driving. I mostly need the meds to stay awake in my classes, which is terribly hard for me to do on my own.

Thanks for the advice. I have drill this weekend, so I will speak to my first shirt about this. I appreciate it. :-)

Default What sort of advice?

What advice are you looking for specifically? Advice about bootcamp, what service to join, what MOS? you need to post a little more info to get the help you are looking for.

I hate to say this, but if your narcolepsy is not full blown yet, you have no idea how bad it'll get. Your body paralizes on you and you can fall asleep anywhere at anytime. Driving, while standing up, anywhere. You will have no control over it whatsover. I am so sorry to here you have this problem. If you took a job that didn't require you to be ever encounter into a dangerous area, it might be okay. I doubt the army will let you join and for your own sake, don't try keeping it a secret. It's not worth what might happen to you. There are medications to treat it, but they only work to an extent, and there is no cure.

No, no, no.
Please do not get someone killed because you didn't want to affect your career. You will get a discharge that will not hurt you in the civilian world...do I even need to say that you need to be able to stay awake downrange?!
You know what the right thing to do is.
