Question A soldier witout discipline is not worth the price of the uniform he/she is wearing.

I would like to throw a stone into the duck-pond.
I am a former S/Sgt in the SANDF (South African National defence Force).I got out after serving my 15 in uniform due to certain reasons. 1 of them being the fact that discipline has deteriorated up to the point that the SANDF has lost all forms of discipline.
The reason I'm saying this is Basic Training was 3 months now it is a total of 6 weeks. You can no longer chae a recruit during basic training if he/she does not act on your commands quickly as is expected of a soldier without a valid reason and there must be a training objective attached to it.
When I was a L/Cpl (Pfc) I had no problem giving an order and it would be obeyed, no as a S/Sgt I would have to tell the soldier why I am giving him an order and have to reason with him why it is needed fro him/her to comply.
I would like to see that same soldier when the **** hits the fan and there are people shooting at him/her.
The SANDF is currently trained purely for peace keeping and not conventional war.
To come back to my point when I joined (Conscripted) we were No 1 in Africa and nr 4 in the world. The USA.Britain and Russia being the top 3.
No we are not even under the top 30 in Africa and I don't even want to know where we are in comparrison with the rest of the worlds Armies.

Default respect works

My son recently joined the ARMY. MY son was will disiplined prior to going into the ARMY. However his letters home he says that thye receive alot of disrespect from the Drill Sgt's. I total understand breaking down and rebuilding. However why so much disrespect ? NO ONE I MEAN NO ONE should have to stand by and be cussed at!!! My son was raised knowing you give respect and you get respect. How in the world is yelling " GET THE F%^& UP YOU **** HEADS" every morning building any positve results? I understand not cuddling them as if they were at summer camp but come on. My son talks about the soldier that are not as quick to thinking task are bullied , yelled at screamed at and called stupid idiots.
Oh well the miliitary is a whole new world for alot of young men. I would hope that someone there would understand that we are all just people and deserve respect.

It breaks them down and builds them up, and for the slow ones it motivates them to work harder. The drill sergents want you pass and succeed, they know that you are the army and are trying to make you the best. Sides there trying to get the slow ones to move and become fast or else they risk a towel party, shower party ect...

Default Unrealistic Expectations

What do you think an Soldier is supposed to be for? Initially, we aren't trained just to be physically fit, or just to knowhow to use all the equipment.

We are trained to kill on command. That's what I was trained to do when I went through basic training. You really can't join the military and expect to be treated like a civilian. That's the problem with all the changes that are being forced onto the military these days.

We're supposed to be able to do all the dirty work, so the civilians back at home don't have to worry about it.

Default Still does not make it right!

I have personally raised several foster children from so the the worst family situations . I know who they are treated in the childrens home. But I can sure you all of my child are doing well in the world. I was big on disipline and respect. We live on a farm and if you talked "****" you shoveled ****. I have several sons that the system said were "THROW AWAY KIDS" after alot of respect and discipline they have all graduated 2 sons are in the military along with my Biological son. I understand treating them as one in the military because waht one does will effect everyone on the battle field. HOWEVER having a solider fight with his head held high fights with his heart and soul , knowing he and his fellow soliders have the respect of those that they are fighting for....
