Default Army Officer/Intell.

Just reading some of these posts already has me feeling like an old man, but I've got some questions and wanted to get some more input. I'm 24, just got my B.A. in Communications, have a background with learning languages/cultures (French, Some Russian & Hebrew, and I want to learn Arabic) and I have been considering joining the Army for some time now.

I recently learned of OCS (Officer Candidate School) and decided it might not be too late to sign up. I went in an talked with the recruiter, just trying to get more info before I'd really done much investigating myself because I don't have many people around me that I know/could ask about the Service. I was told that even though I'd qualify for OCS with my 4 year degree, I'd have no real say in my Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) and that that would only be determined at OCS. With both my background and future aspirations, I'd like to get into Army Intelligence but am not sure of the best route. I was also told that going straight for OCS, I would not be eligible for any of the monetary benefits like the signing bonus or GI Bill (I made it through with no college loans, but am considering going back to school for my M.A.).

The recruiter made no real effort to explain why that was and it doesn't make sense to me... I was hoping someone else might be able to share any similar experience or perspective on the enlistment process as it relates to OCS.

Default Reconsider...

If and when they take you...and you do make it to OCS, take my word for it, there will be NO problem getting MI as your basic Branch. Its because no one else wants it.Sure, some Jokester will try to get you into 11-B (11-Bullet stopper/Infantry), but who wants to ride around in a HUMV and get blown up by Haji right? If you have some magical skills that the Army needs say, next Wednesday, hell, they even have Direct commisions! You just get sent to Benning for a shake and bake course on how to get dressed in the morning, how to tie your shoes, and learn not to show up for PT formation in your dress greens. If your lucky, that may even take the time to show you which end of the M-16 is the dangerous end before deploying you...cause Lord knows, Bushs' Boondoggle needs warm bodies...

At 24...you are not an old man. Although when I went to Flight School as a 28 yr. old E6, I felt like I was in kindergarten at times...good luck anyway.
