Mullahs Stepping Up Uranium Enrichment in Iran
Mullahs Stepping Up Uranium Enrichment in Iran
Oct 28, 2006
Associated Press
Iran officially confirmed that it has stepped up uranium enrichment by injecting gas into a second network of centrifuges, a state-run newspaper reported on Saturday.
The injection of the uranium gas into the second cascade marked Iran's first known enrichment since February.
"We have exploited products from both cascades," the Iran Daily newspaper quoted Mohammad Ghannad, deputy head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, as saying Saturday. "The second one was installed in the past two week."
Ghannad said both cascades were enriching uranium to be between 3 to 5 percent of the uranium isotope needed for nuclear fission _ enough for industrial use but not for weapons.
"This experience will help Iranian engineers get closer to industrial uranium enrichment," he said.
The U.N.'s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, has been aware of the second cascade for the five months, Ghannad said.
Injecting gas into centrifuges can either yield nuclear fuel or material for a warhead, but doesn't represent a major technological breakthrough and is unlikely to bring Iran within grasp of a weapon.
Tehran's announcement signaled the Islamic Republic's resolve to expand its atomic program at a time of divisions within the U.N. Security Council over a punishment for Iran's defiance.
The Iranian Students News Agency first reported the development. Iran's government sometimes uses the news agency to leak information deemed too sensitive for official channels.

Another step closer.....

Youre certainly alone on that one.... It bothers me, and anybody else interested in secure nations of the "Free World"..... and there are things that can be done, cos for one, UN has a host of sanctions it can take against Iran, and they will get more agressive, and the UN needs to be meeting this upto and if neccesary military action against Iran to restore security to the region by keeping Iran Nuke Free.... Its upto Russia how difficult UN action will be to get..... cos for one, my initial sceptism over Irans Nuke Intentions is started to sway.... but only with clear proof will I be fully convinced.... its seems like that day is a matter of time away now...

Well, not everybody.... Apache is too scared!!... the bad man might come and get him in the middle of the night....
100% proof, then act... thats the right way to do it, and restore the UN to a place where it can be reorganised, and the rogues brought to account for their actions.... Iran is a shrewd operator, time for the Dumbasses in Western Govts, to move over and let the clever ones get on with the job of stabilising our world and making it safe.... well relatively anyway...

For sure.... the shift needs to be at a strategic level with policy shifts in a number of places, things would get better at any real rate unless this happens....

Its going to be a long time me thinks..... Getting stability in the middle east, warring factions together at the negotiating table, and parimilitaries dissolved will be first priority.... everybody needs to have wins on their security and then the real dialogue can start.... as this process goes on, the participation and facilitation of negotiations by US/UK will do allot to reverse the damage caused by war... that is more tricky then war.. diplomacy... yikes, the suits make me want to run to this day....
