Augusto Pinochet, the 91-year-old former Chilean dictator, has died, according to a statement from his military hospital.

He suffered a heart attack last week, and died as a result of complications in his condition.

Gen Pinochet ruled the South American country for 17 years and was infamous for his human rights abuses. He had recently accepted "political responsibility" for these abuses.

Margaret Thatcher supported him passionately as he battled against repeated attempts to bring him to court for the disappearances that took place under his rule.

She claimed that he had given Britain invaluable help during the Falklands conflict in the early 1980s.

The general's doctors had said earlier in the day that his condition was "progressing satisfactorily", and he was undergoing rehabilitation to improve his breathing and muscle function.

A week before he was hospitalised, he was placed under house arrest on charges related to the murder after the 1973 coup of two bodyguards assigned to toppled socialist president Salvador Allende.

But on Monday, the house arrest order was lifted in the wake of his hospitalisation.

His political enemies had accused the former dictator of "shameless theatrics," saying he faked last week's medical crisis in an effort to evade prosecution.
