Intro
Hello, my name is Jeremiah and I am 17 years old. It has been my life's goal to join the marines, unfortunately, my life at home has just dissolved into hell. My aunt, whom I have been living with for a long time, has recently turned into a ***** with whom I cannot continue to live and when I tried to go to charlottesville to live with my mom, they arrested both of us. My mom is still in prison but will be released in less then an hour, but now I am being forced to live with my aunt who is the reason for ALL of our legal troubles. She lied before the courts and officially ****ed up my entire family. So here I am at my grandma's house looking for some info on quick recruitment so that I can have somewhere to stay and hopefully become an emanicpated minor(quite possibly an oximoron) and get the hell out of this city and possibly have the legal charges dropped.
Anyway I know that isn't a proper intro so let me clarify a bit. I am a extremist patriot. I believe that survival of the country is the most important thing but I do not equate government to country. It is the people of america to whom I am loyal and I am willing and ready to die fighting for them. I have had many near death experiences in my life and though they were usually painful and quite uncomfortable thereafter I was not once unwilling to go. I hope that these things along with sheer determination will cause me to have what it takes to be a great soldier for the united states military hopefully sooner rather then later.
I'm trying to find out a few things about what recruitment in the military would mean because I'm a abit undereducated on the matter. Until just recently I had planned on attending another year of school prior to recruitment, and therefore it was not an urgent matter. But now, I am planning on getting a GED before the end of the summer and joining immediately. If this is not the right place to be asking these questions, please feel free to redirect me to another section of the forum, and you can keep this thread introduction based.
A. Where would I start? I assume that upon recruitment I would be sent to be physically evaluated to make sure that I am in good enough condition. I know that as a marine I would be started in Parris Island but as a recruit for the army I have no idea.
B. When would I start? Again with the assumptions I would think that it is done seasonally perhaps even monthly which leads to the next question-
C. How long does boot camp last? and where would I be sent after completion?
To someone who actually knows what he's talking about these questions may seem completely irrelevent and please feel free to educate me on the matter because I am completely working from scratch, I have no immediate(easy to contact) family who have done this before so any and all input would be appreciated. Thank you in advance

Yes, I agree... Tacky is No1 US Soldier for sure.. our resident MSG.. However, to the young man with bad family problems and many questions, my own 2pence worth is as follows;
1. Google is your friend, use it... Google words like "US ARMY", "US ARMY MOS" "USMC MOS" "US NAVY MOS" "US ARMY RECRUITEMENT" "US MARINE CORPS RECRUITMENT" "USMC RECRUITEMENT"... Chat online to Sgt Star about US Army recruitment, dont limit yourself to the Marines unless you are 150% Sempre Fi...HOAAH!!..
2. Joining any branch of the military cos your home life sucks is not a reason to join.. I hear ya on the fact that your Aunt is causing you problems, and I can safely assume that that is only the tip of the iceberg.. However, no matter how bad your home life is, if you are looking to the army as an escape is not the reason to join up.. for country and your brother soldier, go ahead, if not then you risk becoming a liability to your fellow soldiers, and your unit... THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING.... I appreciate its difficult cos of your ****ty home life, but if you talk to your aunt, she may have ideas that might support your career ambitions (assuming they are that, and not a get out of home free card)...
3. Military is a big decision, get as much info online as possible, prior to seeing a recruiter cos recruiters are like used car salesmen... they will try and talk you into a MOS they need to fill, so write down your questions for them, and go for what interests you from your online research...
Finally..... I feel for your position, but life is sucky that way... some folks seem to have it handy, when your balls to the wall with problems... but if you look deeply enough, you will see that you ar not alone in problems, we all have them.. the difference is how we deal with them... 17 is a young age for such burdens, but if your shoulders are big enough, and your spirit strong enough, then you will dig deep and summon strength you never knew existed... you will be suprised if you do, and it will define your resiliance and character as your move into adulthood, and the problems that presents... Good luck to you!..
Exo..

First off.....Welcome. I'm Army Aviation and can tell you exactly. I'm Army All the way......Tacky, "is my boss". I got this one boss.
1. You'll sit down with a recruiter and look at "Your back ground". No criminal records..means No waivers. Then you will take a look at certain Army jobs (Military Occupation Specialties) that await you and see which ones your good at and which ones you really like.
2. At this point.....The Army will make arrangements for you to go and take "Your ASVAB Test". http://www.military.com/ASVAB take this practice test and study for at least two weeks. Make sure you do the short and long version. This test will determined....your score. The line score of 31 will get you in and the score of 50 and above will ensure you get the (mos) that you want. How important is the ASVAB test? Your scores in four critical areas -- Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge -- count towards your Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score. The AFQT score determines whether you're qualified to enlist in the U.S. military.....Do well on your test......theirs alot of great Army opportunities. The great jobs.....Like Army Aviation. Cool. http://www.army.com/enlist/mos.html
3.At this point you are ready to go to (MEPS)
MEPS stands for Military Entrance Processing Station. Once you have gone through initial questioning phases with your recruiter and have discussed your options, your recruiter will set an appointment for you to go to the nearest MEPS. Here you will take the ASVAB, have a physical, and (if you pass) - choose your job and swear in. Everything together should take 2 days, though there are some situations that may make things shorter or longer. Some people will go into their branch's DEP (Delayed Entry Program), and go home after MEPS to wait until their ship out date. Others will embark to basic training immediately following MEPS. Remember, you have NOT joined the military before going to MEPS, but by the end of it you will be asked to. Do you still want to join? Be sure of this before you go!
Here are some helpful hints for BEFORE you go to MEPS: When they ask you crazy questions: Like, if you ever went to a guidance councilor at school for personal problems: Say no to it. Remember: The least "you say" the better off you'll be. Don't lie.. just keep it simple....
1. Discuss any childhood medical problems with your parents and bring documentation with you.
2. Bring your Social Security card, birth certificate and driver's license.
3. Remove earrings (they obstruct the headset used for the hearing test).
4. Profanity and offensive wording or pictures on clothing is not tolerated.
5. Hats are not permitted inside the MEPS.
6. If you wear either eyeglasses or contacts, bring them along with your prescription and lens case.
7. Bathe or shower the night before your examination.
8. Wear underclothes.
9. Get a good night's sleep before taking the CAT-ASVAB.
10. Wear neat, moderate, comfortable clothing.
11. Don't bring stereo headphones, watches, jewelry, excessive cash or any other valuables.
12. Ask your recruiter for a list of recommended personal items to bring to basic training.
13. Processing starts early at the MEPS - You must report on time.
The typical process at MEPS is:
1. ASVAB test
2. Physical
3. Job selection
4. Swearing in
4. Basic training begins with in processing at (Reception). For most Soldiers, in processing is brief, from 4 to 10 days. Here Soldiers receive a general orientation, get fitted and issued Army uniforms, establish personnel records, obtain an identification card, receive visual, dental physical examinations, test for physical fitness, and receive immunizations. Soldiers also begin learning the Army core values and basic military skills during this phase. From the Reception Battalion soldiers are “shipped” to a basic training unit.
Be sure to have all copies of your orders and documents issued by your unit recruiter or the Military Entrance Processing Station. These orders must be hand-delivered by you. At this point..... ;Basic Training Recruit Basic Training, also referred to as "Boot Camp," is 6 to 13 weeks of extremely intense military training which, depending on the Service Branch, is conducted at one of the several Military Training Centers throughout the U.S., from California to New Jersey. Congratulations!!.....Your part of the Army Family. Rock on .....
5..After Basic Training you'll be off to Advanced Individual Training (AIT) where you will learn the skills to perform your Army job (MOS).
Don't worry about minor traffic tickets or arrest. You'll be fine. I hope everything works out for you and your mom. At my unit we all had problems of every kind and the fact that we we're all together and not alone .....helped out..That's just it. Your not alone anymore. The soldiers from my unit are my brothers. The Friendships..The honor and respect we have for one another is priceless. Remember the following..Loyalty, Duty, Respect,Selfless-Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage is what we're all about. We're very cool.
Good luck J.
