I joined the Army Reserves until I graduate College. I am serving with a SMP and joined a Psy Op unit! I'll go to Airborne and Ranger school in the summer and Join Ranger Battalion after I graduate. Hooah!

It doesn't quite work like that, hard charger.

Your unit isn't going to send you to Ranger school without you having some time in, and probably some deployments... slots are hard to get. Airborne you might be able to swing. You certainly won't do both courses in one summer as Rgr itself takes about 3 months in total.

You also won't be able to just "Join" the Ranger Regiment (Not battalion, you aren't assigned a battalion until you pass RIP). You'll have to try and get a RIP slot in your contract, which is almost impossible when switching from Reserves to active duty. If you wanted to be a Ranger, you've put a pretty hard clamp on yourself by joining the Reserves.

Did your recruiter tell you you'd be able to do all of that? <sigh>

Well I asked him If it was RIP when He told me, he really didn't answer me and just said that I would go to Ranger Battalion (Training?) He also told me that going airborne and Ranger School would be simple between terms. And finally, He said that SMP kept me in the states even if the unit deploys. Tacky, any input would be great. I want to get the facts straight.

And No, training would take place different summers.

Congradulations Snips.. great to see your starting your journey.... As Uncle Tacky has pointed out, going from a reserve Psy Op unit to Army Rangers is a very difficult task.. but I wish you luck in it... Dont forget youre in a good unit as a reservist and theres ALLOT of speciality areas that you can get into as a full timer that would directly support Special Forces... Psy Ops are specialist in their own right you know....

Well, Im sure Tacky will help ya out on advice cos I never travelled the US Military road myself, but I do wish you well..

I'm hoping Tacky can help. My Recruiter said that going Airborne is required for PSYOP so Ranger school isn't that difficult to pull off. After I graduate, I can Terminate the 6 year Reserves contract for a 4 year RIP active duty Contract.

As a 37F you'd probably be assigned to Regiment. That's home for a lot of specialty MOSs like dog handlers & Recon.

I don't plan on staying a 37F, Reserves don't have combat arms so this is the best choice for my skills.

I have a strong background in Latin, allowing me to learn languages easily. Not only that They were impressed with my 6 month paid internship with the Cleveland Clinic Psych Department.

Airborne isn't difficult to get since CAPOC has an abn designation.

Ranger school is a different story, whether or not you'll get to go will depend on a lot of factors. Chances are slim you'll see it within the first two to four years of your Reserve enlistment, or without at least one deployment. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but it's unlikely. That's no big deal, though. Any MOS can go through Ranger school now, so now or later .. you can get it.

The problem with jumping from Reserves to Active is that you'll then be prior service. The RIP contract isn't open to prior service. There are ways around it, but it's a pain in the ***. You also have to get your Reserve component to release you so you can go active, which can sometimes be a pain. I notice he left that tidbit out.

You haven't choosen a bad MOS, but just remember you'll have to reclass to another MOS to get into the 75th Regiment even if you can get around the contract.

I don't want to dissuade you, I just want you to be prepared to have to fight to get what you want later.

I'm in a rush now, but I'll give you some more info later.
