They real way is rest, no doubting that.. but you need to have shock absorbers in your boots at all times... I found sobathane Shock absorbers to be the best... but you should ask for advice from the store on it...
Make sure your runners have shock absorbers in them too... Nike Air Max or something similiar...

Too Much Too Fast
Shin splints are most often from training too much, too fast. Assuming that your footgear is still in good and right for you, training can continue while you have shin splints (most runners continue). Unfortunately the shin spilnts will not get better until they have enough recovery time. Just do less speedwork and more easy runs at a slower pace.
Since you have a PT test, you will no doubt not want to back off, and will probably really push yourself, probably even increasing the pain, damage and recovery time. I'm very sorry to say that with continued training several weeks is a common recovery time.
Anti-inflamitories (like Aleve/ other NSAID drugs) help a lot with the discomfort. You can take them an hour or two before the pain causing activity and its in your system already helping (some). Also warming up the lower leg muscles before the run part of the test will reduce the pain level.
All serious trainers get occasional overtraining injuries. More familiarity with your limits, will allow more peak performance with less risk of injury. Those who never push their limits, will never get to know where they are.
Best of luck on your PT test

Another thing you can do is ice the injury after you run. Use ice for no longer than 20 minutes and constantly move the ice, Keeping it in one area can increase tissue damage. Elevate the injury above the heart. You can repeat this 3-4 times a day but allow the leg to return to normal temperature. (Warm to the touch) before repeating.
Shin splints usually occur on the medial tibia. One cause is the peroneus longus muscle becomes stretched and weakened. It lies along the outside of your leg and forms the anatomical stirrup with the tibialis anterior. If your foot tends to roll towards the arch of your foot. That may be the cause of your shin splints.
Always stretch (gently) and warm the muscles of your legs before you begin running. I hope this helps. Good luck.
