Default Manpads

You might have heared of em.. they are nasty?. Damage dealing?, cheap?, and robust?.

Since we have had so little real conversation about thease things lately i decided to
start something new... (i'm also bored)

I guess some members, like Nightflyer would be interested in this sort of conversation?

Anyhows to the subject at hand.

Man-portable air-defence systems.
many countries posess em.. quite few make them, taken that the basic principal is quite simple.

Iglas, Stingers, Javelins..
opinons and good measure of conversation is allowed, but lets keep it within the subject please.

There are two Javelins!

The American Javelin and the British Javelin. The American one is still in use. The America one is anti tank. The British one was Anti aircraft.

Thanks for the heads up Torps and Spike... how to they track?... If they are not hooked up to a Radar station these days, they would not have the abilty to shoot down a modern fighter (thats not going slow)... Good for choppers me thinks.... The firefly was good in its day too... but AA Batteries have moved on...

My best mate used the British version. It used a wire and the controller used a joy stick to guide the missile in. Most hits were proximity hits apparently. The proceedure for dealing with a missfire was hilarious. Basically if the missile failed to launch. You had to stand still holding onto the launcher until the Giro's wound down and then quickly put the launcher in a pre-prepared trench (dug for such an event) then you had to f-ckin run!!!

lol.. sounds like an extract from a Monty Python movie....

Yea, proximity hits are all thats needed to bring down an aircraft especially at high altitude.. the pressure waves (concussion waves) are amplified by the high altitude and the damage to the aircraft in proximity will bring it down....

The manpads are especially effective against helis, and I don't think that Fighters are really on the target list. too fast, too agile. they are effective against UAVs and Some Cruise missiles though.

Helicopters are the primary diet of shortrange man launched SAM.
I don't really know much about the British AA Javelins performance,
but i do know that the Soviet build Igla has a malicious reputation.
primarily because it tends to ignore flares.. which is kinda rare
when you take the age of the missile in to account.
