Seriously thinking about blue to green
I am currently active duty Navy and I am an E-6. I have 8 years of active service and will have 10 when my contracr ends. I have a few questions about my awards and badges that i have earned in the past 8 years. More specifically my Warfare badges. I am qualified to wear the Enlisted aviation warfare badge and the Enlisted surface warfare badge. Will I be able to wear those badges on an Army uniform? I worked very hard to earn these badges and i would really like to keep them. I have multiple personal and unit awards such as two Navy achievement medals, two Navy good conduct medals, National defense medal, GWOT expeditionary, GWOT service medal, Humanitarian service medal, Navy meritorious unit commendation ribbon, four Navy sea service deployment ribbons, and Navy expert pistol shot medal. Will all of these awards cross over to the Army? I am really ready for a change I am ready for my rank to acctually mean something. Being an E-6 in the Navy is pretty much the same thing as being an E-5. I really dont like that. If I join the Army will I get to keep my rank? I worked too hard to make E-6 to lose it. What ever help can be provided will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey-Rigger,
I am Nightflyer. Some excellent questions. Nice work & good stuff. Very impressive. The Army has their own badges of achivements that your already aware of...That said, We have a MSG (MSG Glenn) and a Top (Tacky) A First Sergeant (E-9), who is the top ranking NCO in a company size unit who could answer all. MSG Glenn; Was a Navy Diver and Army Master Sergeant who earned his Master Airborne Wings. I earned my Assualt (Blood Wings) Wings and I also have one Sharpshooter badge and a certificate that I wouldn't want to lose...I don't ever remember growing up around the The Army and Army Guard seeing soldiers wearing anything but Army Badges and Ribbons on their uniforms..anyways, I don't think you would lose much rank if any but I could be wrong...I have to find out today...It's 0500 hrs and I am ready to head in now...So sometime today I'll try to find out something for you...
Thank You for your service...

We have friends that just came from Navy to the Army... he lost rank (he was E-6/E-7 or something and I know they were upset they went to a lower rank)- and awards/ribbons didn't seem to be transitional. It probably has to deal with the way you deal with your contract & MOS. I can tell you they aren't too happy with the Army (from what they came from).
Best of luck in your decision. As Nightflyer said - we have some pretty knowledgeable people on here that will probably give you better direction.

Hi I am actually on recruiting duty right now so i have the latest information about your questions.
1. your awards and badges do carry over, however in the ACU uniform, you can only wear so many badges, but other service badges are authorized, for example, one guy i work with was in the Air Force and he wears an air force armorment badge in ACU., your medals and ribbons carry over in the dress uniforms, both class A and Dress Blue, see www.armyawards.com, some of the awards you are talking about GWOT, National defense, are the same awards for all branches, I am not certain of the pistol medal, because we qualify on differant weapons
2. rank. if you are an e-5 or below you keep your rank, e-6 and above, you may or may not, depending on your MOS...but the army promotes a whole lot differant than the Navy, for instance in a worse case senario, you come in as an E-5, within 6 months you can go to a promotion board and pick up E6. we promote based off promotion points for the MOS. the points are broke down into, military training, military education (your navy training counts), awards (navy awards will count) civilian education and board results. this can beconfusing, but i will give you my contact info incase you have questions.
3. where are you stationed and what is your MOS?
if you need anything else let me know

Rigger,
I went USN to Army after a 14 year break in service. I qualified for the Submarine Badge, SCUBA Badge, & Master Diver Badge & wore them on my Army uniform along with my Army jump wings which I also earned in the Navy. The only stipulation was that they had to be subdued on fatigue/BDU/ACU. In the Army command that I was assigned to it was a requirement to wear, in garrison, any badge that you were authorized to wear. If you got 'em, flaunt 'em. Each badge I earned was a requirement to stay in my Dive Detachment & each one was a ballbuster to attain. The easiest course I took was the Army Airborne School at Benning. Only 3 weeks & we only had to double time between stations. Piece of cake.
I got out of the Navy after 6 years as an E 6, lost one stripe in transition & got back to E 6 in a year.
I went on to put in another 21 years in the Army.

Welcome Rigger, impressive collection of medals and awards you have, and as Fire said, allot gets lots in transition so to speak... Im not US Army, but am aware that ranks do drop cos experience needs to be gained doing an Army job at that level.... May I offer an option that is on a forums member career goals here, its the "Navy Wolverines"... they are a brown water Navy outfit that are very good at what they do and have relative similiarity to the Army. You would not leave the Navy but would do an "army" type job..
As Nightflyer says, the specifics of your questions can be fully answered by Glenn or Tacky, as they are best seated for such good and specific questions...
One final note, just cos your not in the thick of the action doesnt mean your current E6 job doesnt matter... Every job matters, and without them the machine cant function properly... the fact that you are serving says loads to your character, youve nothing to prove by jumping ship (excuse the pun... ) and going directly to the fight!!..

Thanks
Thanks for all the great responses. I have been wanting to join the Army now for a few years and I am seriously thinking about making the change. I know that the grass isnt always greener but i will never know if i dont try it for myself. I dont want to finish my career and say I really wish that I would have been brave enough to try something new and possibly something more challenging. I am a little nervous about losing my rank because it is a pretty serious pay cut between E-5 and E-6. Something like $750.00 a month between BAH and base pay. That will make my life a little more stressful for a while but I was an E-5 for 4 and 1/2 years and my family didnt struggle too bad I think that I could make it work again. Has a nyone crossed over from the Navy to the Army recently that can maybe answer a few of my questions? Any way thanks again for all the info I really appreciate it. Perhaps I will be wearing Army green before too long.
