Default Hello there....looking for fellow Rakkasans

Hello everyone,

I served from 1985-1989 as an airborne / air assault qualified 11B. I spent 1 year in Korea in the 2ID (1/17 (M) INF which was re-designated 5/20 INF) spent the remaining three years in the 101st ABN DIV assigned to the Scout Platoon 1/187th INF Rakkasans. Give me a holler if you'd like to BS or swap war stories.
I'm especially interested in meeting other Rakkasans
Cpl. Joe

I was attached to the Rakkasans on one of their rotations to Sinai..pretty interesting times. I hung out with those my age, so I don't think they were around when you were, lol..it was in 95-96.

Hey, Cpl Joe! I usually say hello, but my time lately has been taken up with sending a kid off to Ft Benning. Welcome - and don't give up on us just yet.

A good friend's husband is a Screaming Eagle. He just got home unexpectedly in March, due to meeting an IED. He's a good man and a tough soldier, but he's the only member of the 101st I know. Sorry.

Sorry to hear about your friend's husband....I wish him well
@ Armygirl I did a rotation in the Sinai in 88-89, one of my best duty assignments actually, maybe because I had a sham job (I was a SCUBA instructor / lifeguard at Herb's beach [do they still call it that])
We used to have some pretty wild bunker parties at South Camp as I recall. I've heard that Sharm has changed a lot that it looks more like Eilat now, I remember when there were 3 hotels, a port, a bus stop and a little store called Ivan's of Sinai. Just out of curiosity what is your MOS?

Oh things changed a lot, and honestly I couldn't even tell you what anything is anymore...I'd have to dig out some journals and photos. We were limited in where we could go (at least the females were) so we didn't get to venture very many places. I was Admin in the Army and I got attached to the unit to support them in the mailroom...(let me tell you how much that SUCKED).

Well it depends on your perspective....We were always hanging around the mailroom for some reason (probably had to do with the fact that the head mail clerk was female ..... one of about 10 on all of South Camp)....lol. Anyway, the only non - 187th personnel attached that were part of our TF were finance and JAG everything else was taken care of by the permanent party LSU unit. We used to detail guys with profiles to help out in the mail room as I recall too.

@ jrj thanks mate....you a rugby fan by any chance?

Hello Airborne grunt!! Now there's two of us aboard. That should be more than enough to stave off all these legs!

We also have SCUBA in common. I never taught it in the military or civilian but I qualified Master Diver when I was in the Navy in UDT 21.

Went in the Army after being out of the USN for 14 years at age 38, Airborne Infantry. Retired a few years ago. Had a ball in the military. Each day was like a holiday to me. I sorely miss it. I would have loved a shot at CSM!

Roger that MSG Glenn!!! But the Army needs legs too....we can't take up ALL the slack
Unfortunately my SCUBA qualification wasn't military but civilian (I was supposed to re-up for a 00B slot, but that is another story). NAUI Open Water diving certification was made available to soldiers as part of the R&R program during our MFO rotation in the Sinai. About six months prior to deployment the Bn commander selected about 20 of us who already had C-cards and some diving experience and the Army paid for us to take the comprehensive NAUI instructor course.
I was Airborne but unfortunately (as I explained to one young man in another thread) in the Army's infinite wisdom was never assigned to a unit on jump status. By the way, I see that things haven't changed in 20 years a lot of kids think that getting the 11x and airborne option is an automatic ticket to the 82nd (or one of the newly activated units on jump status)....wrong answer, I wound up as an M113 jockey at Camp Casey Korea for a year before being assigned to the 101st ABN (which for those reading who don't know maintains the "airborne" denomination for tradition only... we were actually AIR Assault) Although I must admit that dangling underneath a blackhawk (or the occasional Huey) 90 feet above the ground can be pretty Hoowah too.
38? wow that's hardcore MSG. I'm 41 don't know if I could hang anymore........ Wait did I say that? Forget that......Failure is not an option Airborne.....Ruck up and drive on!!!!!

Scouts Out!!!
Cpl Joe
