America and the United States
Why do so many people refer to the U.S. as America?

I mean --- come on --- why is a chicken called a chicken?? Or an idiot called an idiot??? All I can tell you is that we were founded as the United States of America and have been known as America and as people - Americans since at least 1776 --- which is way before my time and I would hope yours - unless you have found some magic elixer which you are not sharing.

Kinda like calling France Europe.
Mexico is as much in America as the U.S. is. Isn't it?
I often call it America too. Or call U.S. citizens, Americans.

The United States of America is our official name. If Canada had "America" in its title, their would be called Americans.
But since our country is most associated with the name, the world has dubbed us so.

I can see your point CS...but I guess thats just the way it is..most of the time I refer to it as the US or the States
