Help for Heroes X Factor single soars to number one
The X Factor charity song Hero burst into the charts at number one after becoming the fastest-selling charity single of the decade.
The song - which is raising money for servicemen and women injured in the line of duty - is tipped to become the biggest-selling release of all time.
The record has sold 313,244 in its first week of release - outselling the entire top 10 combined.
All net record company profits from the sale of the song will go to the Help The Heroes charity and the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
The cover of the Mariah Carey hit is sung by the final 12 acts from this year's X Factor series.
The fundraising received another boost when Woolworths announced it was giving away its profits from sales of the single. The retail chain said that at least an extra £25,000 will go to the charity as a result.
On Wednesday, Chancellor Alistair Darling said VAT on the sale of the single will be waived and donated to the charity. Even Prime Minister Gordon Brown was getting in on the act, promising to buy his wife Sarah a copy for her 45th birthday.
