Default What is the Penalty for Assisting someone who goes AWOL?

One of my friend is about to make a very large mistake. Just curious as to what I can tell them they should be expecting for harboring a fugitive. Thanks!

Also plan on turning them in because I think their scum.

I'll start organizing the firing squad.

Why in the world would anyone want to go AWOL? Loss of a paycheck in times when jobs are scarce, having to look over your shoulder for the rest of your life or until caught, contract still in effect so when caught he'll have to have his AWOL & jail time added to his enlistment.

If the military is too tough for him maybe he should have researched it further before enlisting. For cryin' out loud - the military isn't that bad!!

Do not! Do not! Do not help him in any way, shape or form. Why should you get an aiding & abetting charge against you? You're not the yellow-bellied cry baby!

No penalties. Civilians aren't covered by the military code.

True. But thy're still covered by civil codes. Aiding & abetting a felon can be prosecuted. The same holds true for AWOLs or deserters being picked up be the local PD. Locals don't turn their backs on crime no matter what jurisdiction it falls under.

In countrys such as ours i can see who the Death penalty would apply.. in certain circumstances.

I dont think he meant them personally based on past issues, I think he meant they are scum for deserting and he's absolutely right.

And if you are in the military then you better make sure you report it. Failure to report is violation of UCMJ. (Found that out the hard way when me and 6 other guys got 80 people sent to Captains Mast).

we had a soldier go AWOL at his first drill. showed up for 3 hours then left the DS found out and called the sheriff and they got ahold of him. They are scheduling a meeting to talk to him to see what his whole story is. They take AWOL's very seriously I doubt he will be shot but that is the max penalty for your friends actions.
