Rapid Fielding Milestone at Fort Polk
|
 FORT POLK, La. (Army News Service, Sept. 26, 2007) - The Army's Program Executive-Office Soldier outfitted it's one-millionth customer with a Rapid Fielding Initiative kit here Sept. 25. The Soldier was Pfc. Carlton Speegle of Company D, 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. He received a coin from PEO Soldier and a letter from Brig. Gen. R. Mark Brown, PEO Soldier executive officer.

50th Anniversary of Operation Arkansas
|
 Fifty years ago today, the Army, helped to usher in a new era for civil rights. In a time of inner turmoil for the United States, the Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division had the tremendous task of keeping peace in their own country. They stood guard and protected nine young African-Americans so that they could enjoy the rights promised to all U.S. citizens. The unit was able to complete their mission without injury to the students, citizens or themselves.

Joint Efforts Putting BIAP Back on Radar

 BAGHDAD, Iraq. For more than 15 years, Baghdad International Airport has been virtually inactive. After years of trafficking very limited aircraft to and from the airport, Coalition Forces set out to change the way the world sees Baghdad by placing it back in the business race one project at a time. Army Lt. Col. Jack Pflaumer, BIAP reconstruction deputy director, 358th Civil Affairs Brigade, has seen a lot of progress since efforts began in 2005. With the grand opening of a business center and plans to build a new office tower, hotel and two convention centers, the Langhorn, Pa., native said BIAP is well on its way to rejoining the international business community.

Center for Wounded to Replace Current Facility

 FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas (Army News Service, Sept. 21, 2007) - A new Warrior and Family Support Center being built here will be 10 times the size of the current facility. A Sept. 15 groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction on the new 12,000-square-foot facility located across from the post's Fisher Houses, where many wounded warriors and their Families stay during long rehabilitations.

 BALTIMORE, Md. (Army News Service, Sept. 16, 2007) - The logistics support vessel Major General Robert Smalls (LSV-8) - the first Army vessel named for an African American - was inducted into the Army's watercraft fleet yesterday during a commissioning ceremony at Baltimore's historic Inner Harbor.

Plus-Up Turns Momentum Against Terrorists

 WASHINGTON (American Forces Press Service, Sept. 17, 2007) - Coalition and Iraqi forces must maintain the momentum generated by the troop plus-up in Iraq to defeat terrorists and insurgents, a senior military official in Baghdad said yesterday. Army Brig. Gen. Joseph Anderson, chief of staff for Multinational Corps Iraq, talked about results of the increase of offensive operations made possible by the troop plus-up. Brig. Gen. Anderson spoke during a joint conference with Rear Adm. Mark I. Fox, Multinational Force Iraq spokesman.

September 11, 2001, was a defining moment in American history. On that terrible day, our Nation saw the face of evil as 19 men barbarously attacked us and wantonly murdered people of many races, nationalities, and creeds. On Patriot Day, we remember the innocent victims, and we pay tribute to the valiant firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel, and ordinary citizens who risked their lives so others might live.

Gates told grieving family members at the Pentagon's west wall today that the military would continue to pursue and defeat America's enemies, especially terrorist organizations such as al Qaeda, which instigated the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Growing Iraq's NCO Corps

 WASHINGTON (American Forces Press Service, Sept. 6, 2007) - It will take 10 years to breed Iraq's noncommissioned officer corps, the general who oversees training for Iraq's security forces said. Often described as "the backbone of the Army," a noncommissioned officer, or NCO, is an enlisted member of an armed force who has been given authority by a commissioned officer. The NCO corps includes all grades of sergeant, in addition to corporals.

Soldier Pulls Family from Burning Car

 SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Army News Service, Sept. 6, 2007) - Staff Sgt. Danny Stanley served a year in Iraq, but the awards for heroism came for what the National Guard Citizen-Soldier did back home. Staff Sgt. Stanley is credited with saving the lives of three people after the Mississippi Army National Guard member drove upon a fiery car crash.

President Bush to Troops: Military Surge Working

 AL ASAD AIR BASE, Iraq (Army News Service, Sept. 4, 2007) - The military surge into Iraq is working, President Bush told troops yesterday during a surprise visit here. The president said he came to Anbar province so he could see the success in the war on terror and thank the men and women who are making sacrifices for that success.
