Every week I get emails from people asking me how to deal with being older than the average recruits at basic training. The age limit to enter the active duty Army has risen twice this year already (currently at 42). Due to the new age limit and increased recruiting efforts nationwide, the Army has been exceeding its 2006 goals.
Obviously, as a result of this new age limit increase, a different crowd of people are joining the military; and they all have the same concerns. Here are a few of the questions I have received recently about basic training. Even if you aren’t over 30, read the answers carefully. I always like to say every 5 minutes of reading you do on basic training before you leave will reduce your amount of push ups by 5%. SGT Volkin, I am joining the military at 34 years old. I used to run a lot but after having a couple kids and taking a few years off of exercising, I am not sure I can keep up with the 18-23 age group anymore. What can I do?
Answer: Actually, basic training isn’t about competing with other recruits; it’s about meeting military standards and exceeding your expectations. In my book there is an 8-week fitness guide that walks you through, day-by-day, specific basic training workouts. Follow that guide and you will far exceed any military standard.
Update: This letter writer emailed me back after she completed the workout described in my book. She claims she is doing one-arm push ups now for the first time ever! She also reported she just ran her fastest 2-mile run in her life after only 8-weeks of training.
Question from Paul:
I am 40 years old and want to serve my country, with the new military age limit, I now have my chance. Will the younger recruits be looking to me for guidance simply because of my age?
Answer: The answer to your question is two-fold, yes and no. At first some recruits will look to you for guidance simply because of your age. However, after they get accustomed to basic training and drill sergeants, they will learn quickly not to listen to what other recruits say and only what their drill sergeants say (or yell).

Answer: Actually, drill sergeants view everyone differently but treat everyone the same. The drill sergeant’s job is to break you down mentally as a civilian and build you up into a soldier into a very short time. To do this a drill sergeant must be tough so you may get a couple cracks at your age, but don’t worry too much about it. They are just testing your mental fitness.

I enlisted into the military at the age of 34. This was the best career move I have ever made in my entire life. I have no regrets. The only regret I have is that I am no longer apart of the best organization the military has to offer. The more mature you are can e very rewarding to the military and the younger recruits. The older recruits bring with them wisdom and integrity. I served my country for eight years. I received an honorable discharge and my career painfully ended over a year ago. Nothing would please me more but to serve my country again but unfortunately I exceed the age limit by at least two years. Would it be possible for a veterean to re-enter the military who has exceeded the enlistment age?

SGT Volin, I actually 26years old I first joined the Army when I was only 19years old, I was charpter out of training because at the time I actully had to come back home for family issues. Hello, 2 and a half years ago I tested positive for cocain at meps. Before I had found that out I decided not to enlist and I moved so I just found this out when I went to take the ASVAB. I would still love to join a branch of the military, but am not sure of my options. This was a one time situation and is not some thing I have done since the test 2 years ago. I am also attending classes at my local University and was wondering if the ROTC would be an option or not with my past positive test. Any information is appreciated.

I tried to join Army since I was 21 years old (1997). However I am not a citizen so, I couldn't get in. That's what I was told by the recruiter on college (at that time army recruitment was still permitted on campus). On September 11th, 2006 I tried again. Same result. Since then, every single year I tried to contact Army or Navy. I know, they are from different branches but I am interested in both. Navy, was my first choice back then then but now I perfer Army.
Now it is 2006, probably I will able to get my legal resident application process on the mid of 2007. By then, I will be 31 years old. I understand that I cannot apply for Commissioned Officer rank if I am not a citizen even when I am a permanent resident. Say, by the time I become a citizen I might be around 33 years old.
I am still concern will I able get a chance to get a higher rank? I have a bachelor degree and two master degrees. I have another unfinished bachelor degree (short of 12-15 credit hours).
The whole time overhere, my status is still legal at least as a student and now h1-b. I've never gone home since the first time I arrived here. I paid taxes and like many others have to wait in line for legal status application. One thing, I still don't understand some immigrants whom came in in short time able to get into military? Please help and I need to know how.

The problem in New York or other major ultra liberal far left-wing area, you will have problems with them opposing all sort of military recruitments. They will block the entrance and calling you name. Worst of all, they are attacking recruiters and other officers "baby-killer". Man, I really despise these people. Disagreement over war is one thing, but attacking our brave men and women and even potential people who wanted to sign up, is a lowest point for them.

with so many people *wanting* to sign up and do whatever is needed (who are over the max age),
why do we not let them (and myself) sign up (if we can pass the physical criteria) and go -
rather than send those younger adults with young children at home ( who would be of use to their communities supervising and being present as parents with their young children locally etc and who aren't chomping at the bit to go ) ?
There are many of us over the max age who'd love to commit to it and are ready (and available) to ship out *today* yet here we sit, waiting for the age to be raised (if ever).
Americans are healthier than ever-seems as if the physical is passed, and we're willing to be *shaped* completely, how can we then be undesirable. It's very very disappointing, and seems a huge waste of willing resources, compared to the country's current need for healthy, effective, and driven feet on the ground.
I am a 57 yr army old vet who has been trying to re-entlist in either the guard/reserve or active duty. I started the process 3 years ago and have continued to hit numerous roadblocks. I have a total of 7 years combined active duty/guard service. I am well aware of the age limits; however, I also know others who have been recalled at ages beyond the policy. Do I have any status with inactive reserve component or otherwise? My education is at the Master's level.

In basic traning the drill sergeant would always ask... "soldiers, What makes the Green grass Grow?" We used to reply " Blood, Blood makes the green grass grow Drill sergeant!" So does that mean that our soldiers blood is turning the Iraqui desert into paradise?

I JUST turned 43 two weeks ago and now I see on CNN that the Army has raised the age to 42.. I wanted to enlist on 9/11 but was "over" the age limit then and now appear to be a couple weeks 'too old' again. I know for a fact that I can keep up with any 20 year old (after some basic) and am a Master Certified ASE Heavy Truck (Diesel) AND also a Master ASE Auto Technician and could be a HUGE help over in Iraq.. is there any way for me to still be able to join???

My vision is to be a military personel this has been my aim right from my child hood, but due to the situation of my country i have try all my possible best to join the nigerian defence academy but all my effort is been is vain cos even though you have all its takes to be admited if you are not connected with top officer they will not addmite such person which is very bad. i joined at 17 quit trainee hanorable discharge because i was in love with a 16 yr old girl whos name i cannot remember.i raised 3 men 2 in the guard 1 headed to iraq.i also half raised another young man headed to iraq.i joind the state guard at 43 support guard igr.three years.id give my left gonad at the age of 48 if they would give me another shot.commercial roofer 30 years.
I'm 47 and would love to come back in the Army. I guess the are requirement for those with prior service is 42. I would think they would want people with prior Army service to reenlist. Can someone let me know if I can?
Hey, what does it mean "you can join U.S. Army with a I-155 application"?
does it mean that i can come to US, for example as a tourist, then apply for a I-155 and then go to a recruitment office? also without having my green card in my hands?
i ever thought that the green card was absolutely necessary, but here it seems that applying is enough.
am i dreaming or is it true? please, answer me clearly "you NEED the g.c." or "take the plane and come here".

I am 44 and do not qualify for enlistment, as I exceed the max age limit of 42. I have a BS in Computer Science and am 6 classes shy of my Masters in Computer Information Systems. Is there any other opportunities for those of us with corporate experience and higher education. We have alot to offer and it would be a waste to turn us away, as we are a valuable resource. Know that if they raise the age limit to 45, I would be standing in line.

Thanks for taking your time and managing this site. My question is what are the age limits for entrance into Ranger School and the same question for the Green Berets. I don't k ow if I have what it takes but Ranger is what my heart was set on until I heard I was too old. Either way without wasting time an answer would be much oblidged. I have been talkting with a recruiter but you always need another opinion than them.

Seriously though, I just enlisted at 23 with a new wife and baby on the way, it's going to be hard on the family life at first, but the benefits the Army has for my family and me are amazing!
